Critical readWhat happened. The European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced a 9 billion euro investment in 2025, targeting 119 projects.
The energy group Eib Global invests enormous sums in partner countries to promote energy security and environmental sustainability. In 2025, the EIB has signed financing for 9 billion euros for 119 projects. The 57% of resources went to climate action and environmental sustainability, which is a broader category of only energy investments.
These projects include the construction or modernization of 32,600 kilometers of power lines and 194,000 new connections. In Africa sub-Saharan, where the EIB has signed comprehensive financing for 2 billion euros, interventions include the expansion of an offshore wind farm in Cape Verde, mini-electric networks in Madagascar, and a transmission corridor in Mauritania to connect rural communities to the national grid. In Cameroon, support for rural electrification interests over 1.6 million people.
These expected results, not yet realized, show a crucial point: increasing renewable generation without capable transmission and distribution networks is of little use. Energy security increasingly passes from diversifying supply sources, developing renewables, and strengthening electricity grids. A pressing need for emerging economies, exposed to the volatility of fossil fuel prices and supply interruptions.
But also a priority for Europe, aiming through international investments to consolidate economic relations and make its supply chains more secure. According to preliminary OECD data cited by the EIB, public development assistance in 2025 has fallen by 23.1%, reaching $174.3 billion: the largest annual contraction ever recorded. In this scenario, multilateral banks are called upon to finance infrastructure and mobilize private capital.
The Eib Global group highlighted the need to promote energy security and environmental sustainability through global investment. This is an important step towards a more secure and sustainable society where renewable energy should be integrated effectively into global power grids.
