Taiwanese prosecutors have detained an Nvidia employee as part of an investigation into the alleged smuggling of artificial intelligence servers to China. The servers were reportedly powered by advanced Nvidia chips and exported in violation of US restrictions, according to multiple news outlets.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Keelung District Prosecutors Office identified the suspect by the surname Chang. Prosecutors said he was summoned for questioning after investigators searched his home and workplace the previous week.

Following the questioning, investigators concluded that there was strong suspicion of criminal activity. Chang was detained because authorities believed he might flee, destroy evidence or collude with possible accomplices.

The statement did not accuse Nvidia or any other company of wrongdoing. It said the detained employee was suspected of several offenses, including document forgery. Forbes contacted Nvidia for comment.

Taiwanese authorities had already detained several people in the same investigation between May and June, including employees of server manufacturer Super Micro. The company’s co-founder had been arrested and charged earlier in the year by the US Department of Justice in a related case.

In March, the Justice Department announced charges against three people, including Super Micro co-founder Yih-Shyan “Wally” Liaw, alleging violations of US export-control rules and conspiracy to smuggle goods.
