Founder of EcoBricks demonstrates how waste plastic rejection can be an economic shortfall. Sharghy, a Hong Kong entrepreneur, founded EcoBricks to address the issue of flooding. The main objective was to show there is a sustainable business model.

Financial proofs have been developed together with technical research. Once the technological and commercial viability has been proven, the foundation has launched a pilot project and produced industrial blocks of brick using industrial scale. EcoBricks has developed a production method for blocks of brick that can work with any type of rejected material from other recyclers.

This allows working with existing collection and separation systems, using materials that could go to waste if not recycled. Moreover, EcoBricks considered what would happen when their products reach the end of their useful life. The company thought about what would happen if its products reached the end of their useful life.

The project of EcoBricks has succeeded thanks to its ability to resolve problems for clients before offering help to solve the problems. Clients can send concrete, glass, ceramics, and plastics to be recycled, reducing disposal costs. Then they can buy products made with their own waste.

Sino Group was one of the first commercial customers of EcoBricks, using its Gold Coast Development in Tuen Mun as a trial zone. Sharghy noticed that around 700 blocks needed to be monitored for several months before around 15,000 were installed in January 2022. In the long term, the EcoBricks project has initiated a large paved area with blocks of brick.

This has allowed to reduce plastic and carbon emissions while improving the quality of its works. Finally, Sharghy underlined that sustainability should be a win-win, where the solution is an advantage for both actors.
