The Italian glass industry is facing an unprecedented economic and environmental shock without precedent, caused by the war in Ukraine, increased energy costs, and more intense international competition from China. Italy is the first manufacturing country in Europe in terms of glass production, but margins are always smaller, and the environmental and energy impact is increasing. The European demand has decreased, while China continues to offer fiscal incentives and less stringent environmental legislation compared to Italy, making it difficult to compete.

This trend will also extend to tableware and high-value-added products. The general manager of Assovetro, Walter Da Riz, highlighted that the Italian glass industry is facing an unprecedented economic and environmental shock caused by the war in Ukraine, increased energy costs, and more intense international competition from China. The consequences are evident: industrial production in Italy is already at its limit, and if this trend continues, it could lead to the closure of plants in the future.

To respond to this problem, we could consider joining the European gas market, as Italy is a natural hub, or having a medium-term gas supply at more affordable prices. However, solutions are still under discussion and have not yet been definitively chosen. Italy must strive to maintain a balance between environmental quality and economic growth, avoiding excessive production decline.

At the same time, it should seek to improve competitiveness through innovation and research and development, remaining in the global market. Moreover, the importance of the Italian glass industry as a crucial element for the security of energy and environment in Europe cannot be overlooked, since it represents a significant part of the global consumption of glass. Therefore, it is necessary to find ways to maintain the maximum level of production and ensure the continuity of industrial activities.

The current crisis is an alert for the Italian glass industry, but also a moment of reflection on how to improve its competitiveness and survive future economic and environmental global challenges.
