Logitech’s new gaming chief, Robin Piispanen, says he likes the idea of handheld gaming consoles. “It’s a truly fascinating value proposition,” he says as we sip iced vanilla lattes at my usual café. But the company is not currently developing one.

Piispanen is unsure when—or whether—Logitech should try again following its underwhelming experiment with the Logitech G Cloud streaming handheld. “At this particular moment, we have more important things to focus on than making a second G Cloud,” he tells me.

Personally, I believe the G Cloud would have a better chance today. When Logitech’s $350 handheld debuted in 2022, it was almost completely overshadowed by the far more powerful $400 Steam Deck, whose PC chip allowed users to keep playing without a reliable internet connection. Today, however, a Steam Deck costs as much as $789. The golden age of affordable handhelds is over, and the “new normal” can be prohibitively expensive.
