Critical readWhat happened. The change in financial climate has led to significant transformations in the local banking sector. Some researchers have highlighted that while DBS is still positive, the other two local banks have been hit by a wave of selling that has caused a significant decline in their market valuation.
The global financial situation continues to influence the performance of local banking institutions. DBS, while maintaining an optimistic attitude, has significantly surpassed the general crisis. Analyst Jayden Vantarakis highlighted that improved financial conditions could be one of the most positive aspects for society. Additionally, the provided AMSA data shows a yearly credit activity growth rate of 16%, confirming Vantarakis's opinion. On the contrary, local banks OCBC and UOB have experienced a decline worth over $2.2 billion in market value. This downturn was initiated by Citibank, which released a note on the two banks followed by a significant downgrade of their opinions.
However, even during these challenging times, DBS has remained a reference point for analysts, with an increase of 0.6% compared to recent hours.
The financial outlook projections of DBS are considered unsatisfactory given that they may not meet market forecasts. Additionally, interest rate spreads are increasing, which is stressing banks' profitability margins. However, analysts see a positive aspect in the continuation of the 'best way' environment in finance, which should facilitate credit activity growth. The analysis by Maybank Securities highlights that DBS's financial results will be supported by record credit activities and the trend towards higher prices on assets during rising interest rates.
Thilan Wickramasinghe analyst has highlighted that improving DBS's performance should be supported by its yield options, which should maintain an established NII margin. From Citigroup’s perspective, DBS has been elevated to an “add-on” opinion with a target price of S$79.50 and an increase in market valuation. Analysts from CGSI have reinforced DBS’s position as an “Asia Wealth Proxy,” noting that DBS benefits from growing deposits. However, while DBS has overcome challenges, the financial results of OCBC and UOB may not meet market expectations.
DBS's financial results are expected to show a decrease of 2.4% in net interest income for the third quarter, followed by a decrease of 2.5% for the second half of the quarter. This will depend on the narrow range of NIM (net interest margin) that is anticipated to shrink by just 10 basis points. END SOURCES
