The case of Abby Choi Tin-fung has further heightened attention to some of the most shocking crimes in Hong Kong. This story has its origins in 2023 when the young socialite was accused of being murdered and dismembered. Authorities have declared that this was caused by a dispute over a high-end residence.
In the past year, two women were slashed while they were at the Plaza Hollywood shopping center, an incident that has sparked much curiosity and concern after the pandemic of Covid-19. Szeto Sing-kwong, 43 years old, a former porter, brought a sword handle he had purchased just a few hours before the violent attack on Fong Hiu-tung, 26 years old, and Lau Kai-hei, 22 years old, in a tailor shop. The video of the evidence showed Szeto repeatedly cutting one of the women during an attack that lasted nearly a minute. Fong Hiu-tung, 26 years old, and Lau Kai-hei, 22, were found dead from blood loss and suffering due to the injuries caused by the sword handle. Szeto, accused of two lesser charges, confessed to committing the crimes due to a relapse of acute schizophrenia, which allowed him not to be responsible for the murder. He received psychiatric treatment and supervision at the Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre in Tuen Mun. Another noteworthy case is that of Rurik Jutting, a British banker who killed two Indonesian women in his Wan Chai apartment between October and November 2014. Jutting tortured Sumarti Ningsih, 23 years old, for three days, using violence always more cruel with a glove, sex toys, small tools, and his hands, before cutting her throat. His body was found in a large black bag. Five days later, he brought Jesse Lorena Ruri, 26 years old, home and cut her throat. These crimes have shown that Hong Kong, even though it is famous for being one of the safest countries in the world, has had occasions of shocking crimes like this.
