Critical readWhat happened. New national strategies envisage a reduction of global CO2 emissions by just 6% compared to 2019 levels by 2035. Even with full implementation of current commitments, the decline would only reach 9%. A trajectory still insufficient to contain global warming within 1.5°C.
Climate change is a pressing issue that requires immediate attention. New national strategies show increasing integration of climate policies into economic strategies, but there is still insufficient focus on electricity grids. National targets for reducing emissions have been approved, but estimates associated with commitments indicate an increase in temperature between 1.7 and 2.3 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. This framework highlights the gap between developing clean technologies and transforming energy systems, which are still heavily dependent on oil, gas, and coal.
The COP31 will take place from November 9th to November 20th in Antalya, Turkey, where national targets for reducing emissions will be discussed.
Analyses examine national targets for reducing emissions, their implementation progress, and adaptation strategies against climate change impacts. Documents show increasing integration of climate policies into economic strategies, with greater attention paid to energy security, technological innovation, and enterprise involvement. Around 70% of countries plan interventions on electricity networks, essential infrastructure for integrating a growing share of renewable sources and supporting electrification of consumption. However, only 27% explicitly mentions abandoning fossil fuels as part of its plans.
The presence of specific goals is still limited: barely 10% of countries indicate targets to reduce electricity generation from fossil fuels by 2035, while only 6% envisage explicit objectives for eliminating fossil fuels. More attention has been paid to methane, including in climate plans from 92% of countries. This highlights the gap between the development of clean technologies and the transformation of energy systems, which are still heavily dependent on oil, gas, and carbon.
