A new policy aims to keep the network of family support active in cases where a caregiver who takes care of a fragile person every day falls ill or suddenly becomes ill. The new caregiver assistance insurance policy from Vittoria Assicurazioni, developed with International Care Company (ICC), enriches the coverage of Vittoria Assicurazioni – Health and Wellbeing: if a caregiver who assists a fragile person needs to stop working, the company organizes and pays for home-based social workers, nurses, and support services for the person being assisted. Caregiver assistance with Vittoria Assicurazioni Adriano Chioetto, vice president of General Affairs and Product Development at Vittoria Assicurazioni, explained that the company wanted to extend protection to cases where an unforeseen event stops someone who takes care of a fragile person, to «maintain the network of support needed by the assisted person».

The insured is the caregiver indicated in the policy, i.e., the person who cares for and assists a fragile and non-independent relative. The assisted can be the spouse, civil partner, or partner, a child (even adopted, in custody or sole partner) or a relative or relative up to the fourth degree. Conditions of insurance exclude however relatives over 40 years old and those living in a RSA.

Prestations at home: nurses and family assistance In case of accident, a Home Assistance Individual Plan (PAI) is redacted sending to the person being assisted, if in Italy, one or more of these figures: a family helper for house cleaning, preparing meals and shopping, with the cost of acquired goods borne by the insured; a socio-assistential operator (OSA) or a socio-sanitary operator (OSS) for personal hygiene, clothing, nutrition, mobility and simple medications; a nurse for complex medications, injections prescribed, blood draws, medication administration, catheter management and enteral nutrition, with day and night supervision in severe cases. Outside the house, the guarantee provides for the delivery of medicines at home within 3 hours from the request, the pick-up and delivery of documents, reports, and prescriptions within 48 hours and the scheduled transportation for medical needs: taxi, even with auxiliary as a wheelchair, escort service, disabled transport and emergency ambulance not of immediate need. Conditions of the policy The coverage takes effect if the caregiver goes to the public or private emergency room and receives a prognosis of at least 10 days or an immediate hospital stay of at least one night: the only certificate of the family doctor does not activate therefore the guarantee.

The request must be made to the insurance office before the assisted person has already entered an emergency room. The individual assistance plan was developed to offer caregivers a complete and continuous support during the most difficult situations. This system allows to maintain the network of support that is fundamental for the person being assisted, guaranteeing high-quality treatment and total respect.
