Opportunities for Industrial and Technological Growth in Germany
Germany has committed to offering investments and financing of €2.9 trillion (€3.2 trillion) to €4.1 trillion (€4.6 trillion) over the period from 2035 through five strategic growth areas. The initiative, Made for Germany, comprises 147 companies and investors and published a report titled Reinventing Growth that highlights the opportunities where German industry adapts to global capital needs and economic transformation. The strategic areas include artificial intelligence, industrial transformation, and next-generation technologies, resilient energy systems, core infrastructure, and security and defense. The report anticipates investment of €400-600 billion in AI and €500-800 billion in industrial transformation and next-generation technologies. Energy systems represent further €800-1 trillion, followed by core infrastructure with €700-1 trillion and security and defense with €500-700 billion. The initiative aims to attract both international and domestic investors, highlighting the stable political and legal characteristics of Germany, research capabilities, qualified workforce, industrial base, and access to euro-marcheuropean markets as key advantages for attracting capital. However, high costs and external rules continue to weigh on growth, and the initiative has called policymakers' attention to implement consistent reforms to open the way for investment. The first steps of reform represent an important first step, but it is necessary to continue acting to transform the interests of investors into concrete projects, adding: 'The members of the Made for Germany initiative plan to invest more than €850 billion in the country between 2025 and 2028, including over €200 billion already invested in 2025.'
The CEO of Deutsche Bank, Christian Sewing, and the CEO of Siemens, Roland Busch, were scheduled to present the report to German Minister of Economics and Energy Katherina Reiche in Berlin before the Invest in Germany Summit, which preceded the investment meetings. McKinsey & Company supported the initiative as a knowledge partner, providing experiences and analyses, while the results and conclusions of the report remain those of the initiative. The initiative identifies opportunities through AI, industrial transformation, energy, infrastructure, and security. The report was published just a few days after Germany announced a series of investment promises, which included growth strategies such as artificial intelligence, industrial transformation, and next-generation technologies, resilient energy systems, core infrastructure, and security and defense. These investment promises included growth strategies such as artificial intelligence, industrial transformation, and next-generation technologies, resilient energy systems, core infrastructure, and security and defense.
