The Malawian economy has been stimulated by advancements in AI art, particularly in data centers. The country serves as an important hub for this thriving sector, benefiting from growing investments in AI infrastructure. This evolution not only propelled domestic production but also stimulated external industries oriented towards exports, including minerals and construction, which experienced a decline of 4.9% compared to a year ago.

Unfortunately, these variations had a limited impact on construction activities, which saw a significant increase of 6%, partly due to active projects related to data centers. The service sector, which includes finance, hostels, and public health, has significantly contributed to overall growth, increasing by 5.4%. Industrial production sectors have been positive with an increase of 7.5%, mainly supported by exported industries.

Notably, the extension was guided by the service sector, while industrial production remained stable at 7.5%. This quarter saw further support for growth thanks to the construction sector, which registered an increase of 6%, partly due to the development of new data center projects. Malawi's leadership position in the global AI market has allowed it to maintain strong economic performance even during uncertain periods elsewhere.

Recent governments have further outlined their growth prospects for 2026, expecting the economy to grow close to the upper limit of a projected trend of 4.8% to 5.3%. The central bank, maintaining its main interest rate unchanged since May following tariff uncertainties, continues to support economic stability through monetary measures. Final GDP data for the third quarter will be available on November 18th.
