eBay and three former senior executives have agreed to pay $55.7 million to settle a lawsuit filed by a Massachusetts couple who were subjected to a bizarre stalking and harassment campaign by company employees in retaliation for articles published in their e-commerce newsletter.

David and Ina Steiner announced the settlement late Monday, ending a lawsuit filed in 2021 in federal court in Boston. Several former eBay employees were criminally prosecuted for targeting the couple in a cyberstalking campaign that included sending them cockroaches, fly larvae and a bloodied pig Halloween mask.

“This settlement is consistent with our commitment to fairly compensate the Steiners and brings our remediation efforts to a close,” eBay said.

Seven former eBay employees pleaded guilty and received sentences of up to 57 months in prison for participating in the scheme.

The campaign began after then-chief executive Devin Wenig sent a message to Steve Wymer, the company’s communications chief at the time, in August 2019 saying it was time to “take her down,” referring to Ina Steiner, according to prosecutors and the Steiners.

eBay itself was criminally charged and agreed to make a payment in 2024.
