The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a €450 million financing package for ACEA to support the modernization and expansion of water infrastructure in the Lazio region. An initial €200 million tranche was announced today and will help launch the investment program.
The projects include upgrading water networks, reducing water losses, digitalizing systems, strengthening infrastructure interconnections and developing solutions for water reuse. The goal is to improve overall efficiency and resilience to climate change.
The partnership between the EIB and the ACEA Group has developed over more than two decades, supported by ongoing dialogue and a shared approach to infrastructure investment. Since their first financing operation in 1999, the two institutions have signed 17 agreements worth approximately €2.6 billion, reflecting a longstanding joint commitment to developing and modernizing essential, sustainable infrastructure.
The EIB plays a central role in supporting investment in Italy’s water sector, where substantial modernization and long-term financing needs remain. In 2025, Italy was the largest beneficiary of EIB financing for the sector, receiving €837 million for projects expected to provide drinking water to 3.4 million people, improve sanitation services for 4.7 million people and reduce flood risk for nearly 4 million people.
