Apple says it will not restrict the functionality of devices leased through its new Upgrade program when payments are missed. In an emailed statement to The Verge, Apple spokesperson Brian Bumbery said no restricted mode or device functionality limitations would be imposed because of missed payments or default under the Apple Upgrade program.

The clarification follows 9to5Mac’s discovery of code in an iOS 27 beta for a new system called App Managed Features. The system would reportedly allow financing partners to conduct periodic checks on a device’s status and enable Apple system services to place it in Restricted Mode if its owner fell behind on payments.

According to 9to5Mac, Restricted Mode would prevent users from accessing most apps on the phone, while leaving essential apps such as Phone, App Store, Clock, Settings and Wallet available.
